28 August 2009 | Azerbaijani Parliament considers necessity to adopt law on domestic violence
Azerbaijani Parliament considers necessity to adopt law on domestic violenceIt is necessary to adopt a bill on domestic violence, said the Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee. "As acts of violence and crime in families have recently increased, the problem must be regulated by the law," Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Committee for Social Policy Musa Guliyev said to Trend News on Aug. 27.

On March 31, hearings were held in Parliament in connection with the Council of Europe's (CE) campaign to combat domestic violence against women. "MPs and local and international experts participated in the hearings on the topic of the "Legal aspects of protection from domestic violence", organized by the Parliamentary Permanent Committee on Legal Policy and State-Building.

Guliyev said that, the State Committee for Family, Women and Children submitted a bill on the "Prevention of domestic violence" to the Committee for Social Policy 6 months ago. "After discussions in the committee, the bill was rejected. Most of the provisions in the bill did not meet the reality in Azerbaijan," the MP said.

The aforementioned bill, according to Guliyev, was not adopted by the Committee on State-Building and Legal Policy either. The MP said he has not been informed about the development of a new bill. "Despite this, it is necessary to debate such a bill in the near future," said the deputy chairman of the committee.
