7 October 2009 | People mainly emigrate from Azerbaijan to Europe: UN Resident-Coordinator
People mainly emigrate from Azerbaijan to Europe: UN Resident-CoordinatorPeople mainly emigrate from Azerbaijan to Europe. About 74.3 percent of migrants live there, UN Resident-Coordinator in Azerbaijan Bruno Pueza said commenting the report on human development of UN Development Programme. "About 254,500 immigrants live in Azerbaijan. This figure hits 3 percent of total population. Many immigrants, namely 40 million people live in the USA," Pueza said.

The report on human development has been published since 1990. The report unites three criteria of human development, including long and healthy life, level of education and standards of deserved life. Index of human development is 0,787 for Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan holds the 86-th place among 182 countries. Index of poverty for Azerbaijan is 10.7 percent. Azerbaijan holds the 50-th position among 135 countries.

Azerbaijan has recently got consistent progress in several major indices of development. Life span has increased within five years between 1980 and 2007. These achievements caused systematic progress of Azerbaijan in the list on index of human development.

"I am sure that development of non-oil sector of Azerbaijan and continuation of correct reforms in social services will create terms for more increase of human development in the country," UN Resident-Coordinator said.
